Nagano is the base for touring the Japan Alps mountain range, but it is known for more than just a gateway to the snow. This area is equally famous for onsen (hot springs), temples and castles, with a rich samurai heritage. Takayama is a small town in the middle of the Japan alps, full of culture and seemingly lost in history. A day trip away is Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It will enchant you whichever season you visit.

Due to weather conditions, seasonal changes or the monkeys’ behaviour, the monkeys may not be seen, even during the park’s business hours, and especially from September to November when their activity is irregular. Also, it takes approximately 30 minutes to walk the 1.6 km stretch from the bus parking lot to the Snow Monkey Park.
