Itinerary:

Day 1: Osaka – Kii-Tanabe

Board a morning train to Kii-Tanabe. Sit on the right hand side of the train for some great views of the Kii Peninsula. Visit the Tourist Information Centre for a brief tour orientation and up-to-date maps and transportation timetables. Head to the Kumano Travel Support Centre and shop for some local goods and souvenirs.

Explore Tanabe, a small coastal city on the west side of the Kii Peninsula, well known for its agricultural products such as Japanese apricots and oranges, as well its fresh seafood. The entertainment area in front of the station is called “Ajikoji” and is packed with over 200 restaurants and Japanese style pubs (Izakaya). Every alley is full of quaint places to eat and drink – but not too much before your hike!
