Kyushu by tourist train is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Japan. Enjoy Kyushu’s famous sightseeing trains as you visit some of Japan’s best onsen towns – such as Beppu, a hot-spring town which is surrounded by beautiful nature, the unique sand baths in Ibusuki and the unearthly atmosphere in Unzen onsen. Take in the dynamic views of the volcanic Mt Aso, discover the fascinating history of Nagasaki and Hitoyoshi and feast in one of Japan’s best food cities, Fukuoka.
This awe-inspiring adventure will intoxicate every one of your senses.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Fukuoka
Arrive in Fukuoka.
Visit Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and Komyozenji Temple, also known as Kokedera (“moss temple”).
Explore Canal City Hakata, Fukuoka’s large shopping and entertainment complex.

Accommodation: Fukuoka – 2 nights

Day 2: Fukuoka
Explore the largest city in Kyushu, Fukuoka, at your own pace. Visit Kushida Jinja Shrine, called ‘Okushida-san’, founded in 757. Discover Hakata (Fukuoka)’s local foods at the Yanagibashi rengo Market.

Day 3: Fukuoka – Yufuin – Beppu
Transfer to Yufuin, a quaint little hot spring town, by tourist train “Yufuin no Mori”.
Stroll around Yufuin and enjoy the picturesque vista with the beautiful Mt Yufu-dake along the way. Make your way to your accommodation in Beppu.

Accommodation: Beppu – 2 nights (Dinner and Breakfast)

Day 4: Beppu
Take your time to explore Beppu Onsen – one of the biggest hot springs in the world and home to more than 2,000 onsen.

Day 5: Beppu – Mount Aso
Head off to Aso via the tourist train Aso-boy or Odan Tokkyu. Explore Japan’s largest active volcano. Marvel at the dynamic wonder of nature and savour the fresh air as you take a stroll in the broad grassland of Kusasenri-ga-hama, enjoying the breathtaking sight of the 5 peaks of Mt Aso.

Day 6: Mount Aso – Kumamoto
Board a bus to Kumamoto, famous for its elegant black castle and an exquisite Japanese garden, Suizenji Park. Explore the city in your own time, ensuring you pass by the high-class Hosokawa samurai residence.

Accommodation: Kumamoto – 2 nights

Day 7: Kumamoto
Take a day tour to Takachiho Gorge, or join a Samurai Sword making tour.

Day 8: Kumamoto – Hitoyoshi – Kagoshima
Take the “Kawasemi Yamasemi” tourist train or steam locomotive “SL Hitoyoshi” to the hidden gem, Hitoyoshi City. Explore the prosperous former castle town before taking the tourist trains “Isaburo” and “Hayato no Kaze” to Kagoshima.

Accommodation: Kagoshima – 2 nights

Day 9: Kagoshima
Explore Kagoshima city. Visit Senganen Garden, a Japanese style, landscaped garden. See the stunning contrasts between the garden, the ultramarine coloured ocean and the imposing Sakurajima. Then tour the volcanic mountain island – witness a wonder of nature with superb views from the observation deck.

Day 10: Kagoshima – Ibusuki
Take an expedition to Ibusuki on the tourist train “Ibusuki no Tamatebako”. Experience the unique local onsen, Sunamushi-buro (sand steam bath)! Make sure you see the beautiful picturesque mountain, Kaimondake, from Cape Nagasakibana Lookout

Day 11: Ibusuki – Kumamoto
Explore Ibusuki before heading to Kumamoto

Accommodation: Kumamoto – 1 night

Day 12: Kumamoto – Unzen
Explore Kumamoto City before making your way to Unzen. Take your time wandering around this hot spring town and visit the “Unzen Jigoku Hell”!

Accommodation: Unzen Onsen – 1 night

Day 13: Unzen – Nagasaki
Head to Nagasaki, one of the most important ports, of very few, which were open to foreign traders during Japan’s period of isolation.

Accommodation: Nagasaki – 1 night

Day 14: Nagasaki – Fukuoka
Complete your sightseeing in Nagasaki before heading to Fukuoka for your final night. Visit Nakasu to savour Fukuoka’s famous tonkotsu ramen at the Yatai food stands!

Accommodation: Fukuoka – 1 night

Day 15: Fukuoka – Fukuoka International Airport
Depart Japan or head to your next destination.
