Discover the fascinating history of Nagasaki and Hitoyoshi and feast in one of Japan’s best food cities, Fukuoka. Experience the hells of Unzen and Beppu, taking in the sulphuric aroma as you view the volcanic mud pits, bubbling pools and rocks of steam. Discover the hip, yet historical waterfront town of Moji and the evolution of TOTO toilets!

Itinerary:

Day 1: Kumamoto
Arrive in Kumamoto, famous for its elegant black castle and an exquisite Japanese garden, Suizenji Park. Explore the city in your own time.

Accommodation: Kumamoto – 3 nights

Day 2: Kumamoto
Discover Kumamoto’s feudal past which resulted in the construction of Kumamoto Castle, considered impregnable at the time.

Day 3: Kumamoto – Hitoyoshi – Kumamoto
Explore the hidden gem, Hitoyoshi City – a prosperous former castle town.

Day 4: Kumamoto – Shimabara – Unzen
Stop by Shimabara first to explore the samurai town before making your way to the hells of Unzen Onsen.

Accommodation: Unzen Onsen – 1 night (includes dinner and breakfast)

Day 5: Unzen – Nagasaki
Complete your exploration of Unzen before heading to Nagasaki, one of the most important ports, of very few, which were open to foreign traders during Japan’s period of isolation.

Accommodation: Nagasaki- 2 nights

Day 6: Nagasaki
Explore the rich history and culture of Nagasaki

Day 7: Nagasaki – Kitakyushu
Complete sightseeing in Nagasaki and move on to Kitakyushu, the northern-most city of Kyushu.

Accommodation: Kitakyushu – 2 nights

Day 8: Kitakyushu
Explore Kitakyushu. Spend the morning wandering around the historic buildings of Moji, located in an attractive waterfront area. Make sure to visit the TOTO Museum, displaying the evolution of toilets.

Day 9: Kitakyushu – Beppu
Complete your sightseeing in Kitakyushu before heading to one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts, Beppu. Enjoy a ride up the Beppu Ropeway for a spectacular view of Beppu and Oita City.

Accommodation: Beppu – 1 night (includes dinner and breakfast)

Day 10: Beppu – Fukuoka
Take your time to explore Beppu Onsen. Enjoy the “Jigoku Meguri” (the Hell Tour) to view seven spectacular hot springs too hot for bathing in! Head to Fukuoka in the afternoon

Accommodation: Fukuoka – 3 nights

Day 11: Fukuoka
Explore the largest city in Kyushu, Fukuoka, at your own pace. Visit Kushida Jinja Shrine, called ‘Okushida-san’, founded in 757. Discover Hakata (Fukuoka)’s local foods at the Yanagibashi rengo Market. Experience the nightlife and have dinner at a ‘yatai’ food stall.

Day 12: Fukuoka – Dazaifu – Fukuoka
Among the hundreds of Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan, Dazaifu Tenmangu is the one of the most important. Explore the Dazaifu Government Office Ruins – the administrative centre that governed Kyushu from the late 7th century to the late 12th century

Day 13: Fukuoka – Fukuoka International Airport
Depart Japan or head to your next destination.
