Travel the length and breadth of Japan using planes, trains and shinkansen as you take in the riches and excitement from big cities to sleepy fishing villages to historical samurai and castle towns.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Tokyo
Your 21 day escorted tour of Japan begins upon arrival at Narita/Haneda Airport. Clear customs and immigration before boarding the Airport Limousine Bus to your accommodation in Tokyo.
*We can arrange for early check-in or prior accommodation and any other arrangements before the tour begins.

Day 2: Tokyo (B, L, D)
After breakfast your Japan journey begins with a full day of sightseeing in Tokyo. Your guide will take you to some of the major sights including the Tsukiji Outer Fish Market, Tokyo Sky Tree with 360 panoramic views of the city, Asakus Kannon Temple – Tokyo’s most famous Buddhist Temple – and Nakamise Shopping Street for those little souvenirs. Drive by some famous shopping districts such as Ginza and Akihabara. Enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Tokyo – Nagasaki (B)
After breakfast, depart for Nagasaki on a domestic flight. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to downtown Nagasaki. Your escort will help you validate your Japan Rail Pass for use.

*Note, that heavy luggage is transferred from your accommodation in Tokyo to Hiroshima. Please pack your clothes and toiletries for a two night stay into an overnight bag or backpack.

Day 4: Nagasaki (B)
Optional sightseeing with your tour escort: Visit some famous spots in Nagasaki including Glover Garden, an open air museum that exhibits beautiful gardens and the mansions and related buildings of several of the city’s former foreign residents built between 1868-1912. Also visit Dejima, an artificial island that was built during the Edo period to accommodate Portuguese Christian missionaries.

Day 5: Nagasaki – Hiroshima (B)
Travel to Hiroshima by Shinkansen bullet train.

Optional Sightseeing with your tour escort: Witness and learn of the tragic results of war and heartbreaking stories at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded in 1945.

Day 6: Hiroshima (B)
Optional Sightseeing: Visit Miyajima Island and the World Heritage listed Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. This famous icon is known for its floating red torii gate and is one of the most famous views in Japan.

Day 7: Hiroshima – Himeji – Kyoto (B)
After breakfast, depart for Himeji Castle, a World Heritage listed site, and Koko-en Garden. Continue on by bullet train to Kyoto.

Day 8: Kyoto (B, L, D)
Enjoy a full day sightseeing tour of Kyoto visiting some of the most famous shrines and temples including the Golden Pavilion, Heian Jingu shrine, Sanjusangendo and Yasaka Jingu shrine. Lunch is also included along with dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 9: Kyoto (B)
Optional Sightseeing: Indulge yourself in the rural atmosphere of Arashiyama, just a short train ride from Kyoto station. With Mt Arashiyama as the backdrop, take a walk through the Bamboo Forest, visiting Zen temples along the way. Marvel at Togetsukyo Bridge, where you can view some of Kyoto’s iconic scenery and visit the many shops and cafes.

Day 10: Kyoto (B)
Optional Sightseeing: Take a day trip to Osaka visiting the iconic Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building. Visit Osaka’s Namba region where you’ll find the famous Dotombori.

Day 11: Kyoto – Kanazawa (B)
Depart for Kanazawa by limited express train.

Optional Sightseeing: Visit some famous spots in Kanazawa including the Higashi Chayagai geisha district, Kenroku-en Garden (one of Japan’s 3 most beautiful gardens) and an old Samurai House in the Nagamachi samurai district.

Accommodation: Kanazawa – 1 night

Day 12: Kanazawa – Takayama (B)
Depart for Takayama by JR limited express train.

Optional Sightseeing: Visit some famous areas of Takayama including Kamisanmachi (where traditional samurai houses and old wooden merchant buildings have been converted to sake breweries and museums) and Takayama Jinya (a former government outpost).

Accommodation: Takayama – 2 nights

Day 13: Takayama (B)
Optional Sightseeing: Visit the Hida Folk Village, an open air museum exhibiting over 30 traditional houses from the region and the Matsuri-no-mori Festival Floats Museum. Spend the afternoon exploring this lovely town by yourself.

Day 14: Takayama – Hakone (B, D)
Depart for Nagoya by JR limited express train, then continue onto Hakone by Shinkansen. Dinner is a Japanese meal at your Ryokan accommodation in Hakone.

Day 15: Hakone – Sendai (B)
After breakfast, embark on a full day sightseeing tour of the Hakone and Lake Ashi region. Take a cruise on Lake Ashi, then ride the Hakone Ropeway, stopping at Owakudani Valley for a spectacular panoramic view of Mt Fuji and the surrounding area. In the afternoon travel to Sendai by bullet train.

Day 16: Sendai (B)
Optional sightseeing: Take a Matsushima bay cruise and then visit Zuiganji Temple.

Day 17: Sendai – Hakodate (B)
Depart for Hakodate by bullet train and experience the 53.85km long Seikan Tunnel crossing under the Tsugaru Strait.

Optional Sightseeing: In the evening visit Mt Hakodate which is renowned for its splendid night view of the city and surrounding bay. This spectacular view is a must see!

Accommodation: Hakodate – 1 night

Day 18: Hakodate – Sapporo (B)
Optional Sightseeing: Visit some famous places in Hakodate which include the Waterfront Warehouses overlooking Hakodate Port, Old Churches of Hakodate and Daisanzaka Slope.

In the afternoon, board a limited express train to Sapporo.

Day 19: Sapporo (B, D)
After breakfast, enjoy the sights of Sapporo, visiting Lake Shikotsu, Aeon Mall Sapporo Naebo and Okurayama viewing point. On your tour you will have the chance to visit the famous Sapporo Beer Museum. As your journey nears its end, enjoy a group farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 20: Sapporo – Tokyo (B)
Transfer to Shin-Chitose Airport by local train for your domestic flight to Tokyo. This last evening of the tour is free in Tokyo.

Day 21: Tokyo (B)
Your 21 escorted tour of Japan concludes after breakfast at your hotel. Included in this tour is an airport transfer service to Narita or Haneda Airport.
